Cricket Fiji achieved a significant milestone on 21 October 2023 by hosting the very first primary school cricket competition in the province of Naitasiri, a region primarily recognised for its passion for rugby. The event brought together 12 teams from six participating schools to the Lutu District School ground, which is nestled amidst the picturesque mountainous terrain of Vunidawa and Lutu.

Mr. Sakaraia Vasua, the Head of School at Lutu District School, expressed his gratitude for the alternative sporting option provided to the children to explore and enjoy. The cricket competition was not only a new experience for the students but also a momentous occasion for the province.

Ms. Maca Vuruna, a former national women’s cricket representative who currently teaches at Lomaivuna Primary School, was touched to see the sport she loved, a sport that had taken her around the world being embraced by the children. She was particularly impressed by the natural talent and skills exhibited by the young cricketers, making it seem as if they had been playing the sport for a long time.

The success of the tournament was attributed to the support and participation of the Head of schools, teachers, parents and most importantly, the students. Cricket Fiji expressed its gratitude to all involved and is enthusiastic about the prospect of hosting an even bigger and better tournament in 2024. This event not only marks a significant step in the development of cricket in the region but also provides young talents with the opportunity to explore and enjoy the sport.
